UL1558 vs UL891: Key Differences Between Low Voltage Switchgear and Switchboards

In low-voltage power distribution systems (600V and below), UL 1558 low voltage switchgear and UL 891 distribution switchboards are both widely used. Although they may appear similar at first glance, they are designed for different system levels, performance requirements, and applications. Understanding these differences is essential for correct equipment selection.

Difference in Standards
UL 1558 / IEEE C37.20.1 applies to metal-enclosed low voltage power circuit breaker switchgear. These standards emphasize high short-circuit withstand capability, advanced protection, compartmentalized construction, and operational reliability. UL 1558 switchgear is typically specified for critical power systems where safety and selectivity are essential.

UL 891 / ANSI-NEMA PB 2.1 applies to dead-front low voltage distribution switchboards. These standards focus on safe operation, compact design, and cost-effective power distribution for downstream circuits.

Difference in Applications
UL 1558 switchgear is mainly used for primary power distribution, often connected directly to the low-voltage side of medium-voltage transformers. Typical transformer capacities range from 500 kVA to 20 MVA. The main bus current can reach 10,000 A, with short-time withstand ratings up to 200 kA. Protection systems are usually complex, and circuit breakers are often electrically or motor operated.

UL 891 switchboards are used for secondary distribution, supplying power directly to loads or downstream panelboards. Protection requirements are simpler, many breakers are manually operated, and metering or advanced protection may not be required. Main bus ratings are typically up to 6,000 A, with short-circuit ratings up to 100 kA.

Difference in Structure and Design
UL 1558 switchgear uses draw-out type power circuit breakers, requiring individual compartments with hinged doors. Due to rear cable terminations and maintenance clearances, switchgear enclosures are larger, especially in depth, which is typically 1.8 meters or more.

UL 891 switchboards usually adopt fixed-mounted power circuit breakers or molded case circuit breakers (MCCBs). A dead-front fixed cover is installed on the front, exposing only operating handles and inspection windows. This design allows for a more compact enclosure, typically with a depth of less than 1.3 meters, and cables usually enter and exit through the bottom plate.
